Colleges ought to counsel students about job opportunities, but most don’t

Students need to take charge of their own career planning. Unfortunately, most won’t get any meaningful help from their colleges or their career placement centers. To understand the situation, I recommend reading this post by Roger Schank, one of the more informed and progressive voices in the world of higher education.

I’d also strongly recommend examining closely the job-placement record of any college you’re considering (see this and this post). Moreover, I’d recommend spending more time trying to discern a viable career path than picking the perfect college or major. It’s much easier to choose the best path if you know your destination (see this post).
